Core Skills

Core Skills are five skills that are key to learning and working in today’s world. Employers have identified these skills as those most likely to be needed in a work environment. Not every job will need people who are proficient in all five Core Skills but every job will require some level of ability in some or all of these skills. All 5 core skills are currently required as part of a Modern Apprenticeship.

We are approved to run each of the core skills listed below at level 5 of the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).

The five Core Skills are:

Communication Essential skills to underpin almost all personal, social, learning and working activities
Numeracy Necessary for dealing with the demands of everyday life, study and work.
Information and Communication Technology The ability to use I.T. to process information in many ways to be useful in the workplace and at home.
Problem Solving Develop the skills required to tackle issues and problems in personal, social and work situations.
Working with Others Develop the skills required to co-operate with others in learning and work situations to identify and achieve shared goals.
